Laparoscopic Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass helps morbidly obese patients lose significant amounts of weight without gaining it back. How does the Procedure Work?

Gastric bypass results in weight loss by restricting food intake and altering the digestive process. The procedure is done laparoscopically with 5-6 small incisions. The surgeon creates a small pouch in the upper stomach that serves as the new stomach and connects the pouch to a limb of the small intestine that bypasses the first part of the small intestine. This results in both a restrictive and malabsorptive operation. This means that you eat less and feel full, and you do not absorb all of the calories from what you do eat.
